Meatballs are super-quick to make for a weeknight
supper and there are many ways to serve them (see tip).
The veal in these gives a lightness to the result,
but you can swap it out for all beef, or flavourful pork mince.
This is a good way to use up any day-old bread hanging around.
The recipe is easy to double up on and freeze so you have a
meal for an emergency.
SERVES 4
4 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for the onion
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, chopped
400g tin chopped tomatoes
200g white bread (day old, if possible)
whole milk (enough to soak the bread)
500g beef mince
250g English veal mince
2 tbsp finely grated parmesan, plus extra to serve
4 anchovies, finely chopped
2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley
salt and freshly ground black pepper
350g dried spaghetti, to serve (optional; see tip)
1 First make a tomato sauce. In a saucepan, heat a dash of olive oil over a medium heat, then add half the chopped
onion and half the garlic, then sauté for 10 minutes to soften. Add the
tomatoes and when the liquid starts to bubble, reduce to a simmer and leave to cook, stirring occasionally (about 20 minutes, to create a thick sauce),
while you make the meatballs.
2 In a bowl, soak the bread in the milk until soft. In another bowl, mix the beef,
veal, parmesan, anchovies, half the parsley and the rest of the onions and garlic.
Then add the soaked bread, lightly squeezing any excess milk from it first.
Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Mould the mixture into 12-14 meatballs.
3 Put the 4 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat.
When hot, add the meatballs, turning (for about 5 minutes) to ensure they colour all over.
If necessary, cook in batches so they are not all squashed together,
setting each batch aside on a plate while you cook the remainder.
4 To finish, remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
Pour the tomato sauce into the frying pan over a medium heat.
Put the meatballs back into the pan for a further 4-5 minutes to cook through.
Sprinkle with the remaining parsley before serving.
TIP You can serve the meatballs as they come, or on top of
spaghetti. If you would prefer the latter, cook the pasta
according to the packet instructions until al dente. Drain it in a colander,
reserving a cupful of the cooking water to loosen the meatball sauce if
necessary, and then transfer it back to the pan and toss it with a little
olive oil and butter. Put the spaghetti on a serving plate and top with the
meatballs and sauce. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil
and a sprinkle of parmesan.

Tony admitted he was not shocked by the revelations.
‘Am I amazed? Probably not,’ he said.
‘I’m sort of trying to take all of this in. After all, its my daughter we’re talking about.
If it was somebody else, it would be a different story
altogether. I’d be so excited.
‘I’ve been round the block a few times. I understand how these things happen.’
Another passage in the book revealed a very awkward encounter between Phil’s male flatmate and Jackie’s mother Julie.
‘My mum came over once and when no one answered the door, she put
her face to the screen to see inside and that flatmate was right there in the living room, pants down, w***ing,’ a shocked Tony read.
The revelations come after Jackie spoke for the first
time about her years-long battle with drugs which saw her secretly go to rehab at The Betty Ford
Clinic in November in 2022.
During a tearful on-air admission, Jackie said at the
height of her addiction, she took around 10-12 Stilnox/Ambien sleeping pills and 24 Panadeine Forte painkillers a day.

All six senior members of the new federal anti-corruption watchdog have accepted Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships as calls grow to refer Anthony Albanese over the perks he took from
the airline.
Gift disclosure logs for the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) leadership
positions show commissioners are all part of Australia’s ‘most exclusive club’ the Chairman’s
Lounge membership extended by invite only by the Qantas chair.
This has raised concerns over how impartial the body would be when dealing with Qantas matters.
If Mr Albanese has requested flight upgrades from former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce directly, as reported in a new book,
he may have fallen foul of the strict Ministerial
Code of Conduct which prohibits ministers from seeking ‘any kind of benefit’
Commissioner Paul Brereton declared Chairman’s Lounge
membership in 2023, as did the CEO Philip Reed and deputy commissioners Jaala
Hinchcliffe and Nicole Rose, Sky News reported on Wednesday.
Deputy commissioners Ben Gauntlett and Kylie Kilgour declared their membership
in February 2024, which means it was after the NACC began operation in July 2023.

An NACC spokesperson confirmed the Commissioner, three deputy commissioners and CEO are members of the Chairman’s lounge.
‘This does not impact the integrity of the Commission,’ the spokesman said.
‘Each of the statutory office holders has made appropriate declarations in regards to Chairman’s lounge membership in the NACC Gifts and Benefits register.
‘Qantas is not a Commonwealth agency within the Commission’s
jurisdiction.’
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and his deputy Sussan Ley have said the Prime Minister should refer himself to the NACC over 22
upgrades and extra Chairman’s Lounge memberships received from Qantas.
An insight into the type of service offered by the Chairman’s Lounges was offered
by a job ad posted on employment site Indeed for the one at Canberra Airport.
The ad, placed by hotel group Accor that Qantas contracts to run the lounges, stated they were seeking ‘a highly motivated Food & Beverage Attendant to join our experienced and professional Front of House team’.
‘This role is based within the Chairman’s Lounge, a small fine
dining restaurant and lounge area that offers an a la carte menu designed by Neil Perry Consulting,’ the ad
states.
‘Service is discrete yet attentive, providing friendly and efficient food
and beverage offerings that meets our passengers’ expectations.’

A job ad for the Canberra Qantas Chairman’s Lounge sets out the requirements to serve
the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work a
seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally requesting them
from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted
Mr Joyce while in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport
to ask for special upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights
Mr Albanese received upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome, London, Los Angeles
and Honolulu.
The book also revealed that as well as son Nathan having a ‘plus one’ Chairman’s Lounge
membership Mr Albanese’s partner Jodie Haydon did as well.
Mr Albanese insisted on Tuesday that all were ‘declared in the appropriate way’.
WHAT IS THE QANTAS CHAIRMAN’S CLUB?
The Qantas Chairman’s Lounge is an invitation-only club approved by
the company chairman, with the guest list a closely-guarded secret.
It has been dubbed ¿the most exclusive club in the country¿ and
comes with a distinct black card.
Members include senior-ranking MPs including ministers, state premiers and the Prime Minister, leaders of major unions and sporting groups, Qantas ambassadors, selected A-list celebrities, major
corporate figures and high-profile media personalities.
The clubs can be found in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide but are not signed, you
have to know where to look.
Inside you will find expensive wood and brass furnishings, wool
carpet and marble flooring all bathed in natural light.
Members enjoy fine à la carte dining with a complimentary
premium array of beers, spirits and Australian wines.
Wine bottles are often given as departing gift
Facilities may also include spas, showers and an assortment of books and magazines.
Members may bring in two guests at a time.

‘Tis the season for decadence and a touch of sparkle – and what better way

Champagne is admittedly my bubbly of choice – I love
both poised, elegant styles with brisk acidity and the richer, pastry-like, gastronomic
pours. But with Christmas all about sharing, toasting, and
big get-togethers, stocking up is essential.
Consumer group Which? has named Tesco Finest Premier Cru Brut Champagne the best Christmas fizz,
outclassing Moët & Chandon’s Brut Impérial.
The supermarket fizz costs just £25 a bottle, but many popular Champagnes are priced over £40.
With that in mind, I’m sharing my secrets for sparkling swaps that keep both the palate and the wallet happy.

‘Blanc de Blancs’ meaning ‘white of whites’ is the name for bubbles made solely from white

hidden gem of Franciacorta in Lombardy, northern Italy,

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time,
an offer you simply didn’t refuse. Providing, of course,
that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes,
sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the
menu, but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.
Caviar Kaspia’s signature baked potato and caviar:
‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just
under £150, is ridiculous’
Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back.
And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be
the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand,
went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors
were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome – albeit near
empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very
stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent,
indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of
pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover
in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes
far better than it ought to. Next door, a large
table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such
effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into
an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and
sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to
the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth.
I’d eat this every day if I could. But I can’t.
Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar. One taste is never
enough.

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and
Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday
in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was
released on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries, Smith was held in custody
in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island,
to the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond
put up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be a large electronic surveillance
bracelet attached to his ankle.

Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.
Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch
from 1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and maintaining
a ring that recruited young men to have sex with
him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of “force, fraud and coercion”
to traffic men in a sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors suggest the scale
was probably much larger and have appealed
for witnesses and victims to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home
of Jeffries and Smith and to hotels in Britain, France, Italy,
Morocco to have sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released
on half a million dollars bond in October.

sets out the requirements to serve the high and mighty
Applicants must ‘have experience working in a fine dining environment and the ability to work
a seven- day rotating roster.
The claims Albanese received 22 upgrades from economy when booking Qantas flight by personally
requesting them from Mr Joyce are made in a new book The Chairman’s Lounge by former Australian Financial
Review columnist Joe Aston.
Aston alleged Mr Albanese directly contacted Mr Joyce while
in his various parliamentary jobs, which included Minister for Transport to ask for special
upgrades that only the CEO could dole out for himself or his family.
According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’ 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese

tense exchange with a journalist live on radio.
The Greens leader has been outed as a member of the
Qantas Chairman’s Lounge, an invitation-only set of catered waiting areas and services handed out by the
airline in what has been called ‘Australia’s most exclusive club’.
Mr Bandt was challenged on Monday by ABC Radio National stand-in host Steve Cannane that he was ‘enjoying free hospitality from a company that has illegally sacked hundreds of
workers’.
Mr Bandt replied: ‘And I’ll declare that and people can make their own judgement about what they think about that.’
Cannane was referring to the Federal Court’s ruling that
Qantas illegally sacked 1,700 workers at the start of the Covid pandemic in a case brought by Transport Workers Union.
Commenting on the sacking in June of 2020, Mr Bandt called it a ‘devastating day for thousands
of Qantas workers & their families’ in a Facebook post.
‘We’re thinking of you,’ he wrote.
Cannane challenged Mr Bandt further saying: ‘You don’t think
you should be a little purer on this and just not take their (Qantas’s) hospitality?’
Mr Bandt said he always made declarations about matters such as this and argued
that the party’s policies to tax big corporations heavily show the perks were not impacting the Greens.

An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn’t refuse.
Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else.
Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes,
sure didn’t come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but
no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff.

Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades
back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews,
was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy’s.
It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet.
Until last year, when she reopened as a members’ club in another Mayfair backstreet.
But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors
were opened to the great unwashed.
Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome –
albeit near empty – dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting
of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack
of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background.
The whole place is scented with gilded ennui.
Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of
pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture.
They don’t speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone.
Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows.
We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia
croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to.
Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily,
glossily confident.
We’re looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen’, we would have barely blinked.
Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides
whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study
in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline,
raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous.
But there are few better dishes on earth. I’d eat this every day if I could.
But I can’t. Obviously. That’s the problem with caviar.
One taste is never enough.

March 24 (Reuters) – Marlboro maker Philip Morris International Inc is
working on options to exit the Russian market, citing a complex and rapidly changing regulatory and operating environment in the country
following its invasion of Ukraine.
The company, which garnered around 6% its net revenue from Russia in 2021, said on Thursday
it has discontinued sale of several cigarette products and canceled all product launches for the year
in Russia.
It has also canceled plans to make over 20 billion TEREA sticks,
heated tobacco units intended for use with its
IQOS ILUMA devices, as well as related investment of $150 million.
Earlier this month, Philip Morris had suspended its planned investments and decided
to scale down manufacturing operations in the country.
Rival Imperial Brands too has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party, joining BAT

So you’ve got to be cool about it.’
Souths fans – including Crowe – endured a torrid 2024 season, finishing 16th with a 7-17 record.
Injuries and suspensions played their part
but defensive frailties were the biggest issue, with the Rabbitohs conceding an average
of 28.4 points per game – their worst since 2006.
The Rabbitohs have gone back to the future by sacking
coach Jason Demetriou and re-instating former mentor Wayne Bennett
Souths fans will be hoping to see a fit and firing Latrell
Mitchell back on the park next season
Injuries compounded their struggles, with key players like Campbell Graham missing the
entire season and Latrell Mitchell limited to 11 appearances.
The season’s disappointments led to the dismissal of coach Jason Demetriou, with Wayne Bennett set to return as head coach in 2025.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Rabbitohs have bolstered their roster by signing English halfback Lewis Dodd, Euan Aitken and Josh Schuster.

the worst film ever made.
‘I think what happened, after the first Joker,
there was a lot of talk like, ‘Oh, this was loved by incels.
This was loved by the wrong kinds of people. This sent the wrong kind of message.

and I would turn to one of them and we’d hear this crap
and I’d go, ‘What the f*** is this?’ And they’d go, ‘This is going to bomb, man.’ I go, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever
seen.’
‘We were talking about it at lunch, and we’d go,
‘What is the plot? Is there a plot? I don’t know, I think he falls in love with her in the prison?’ It’s not
even hate-watchable. That’s how terrible it is.’
Despite the negative reviews a number of fans of the sequel
took to social media after its release last month to defend the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.
The film debuted to a paltry $40 million at the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections,
and half that of its predecessor.
Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the
movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels to
introduce a musical element not present in the first film, with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.
‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100% as
divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to
the storytelling they presented. It never deviated to be a film
full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’
Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a meta-exploration of the first film’s
fandom and the musical elements were a lot of fun.’
